AstraZeneca, the world’s leading research and development healthcare company, has just announced that it will launch the cholesterol drug Crestor (rosuvastatin) to the US market in November 2021. Crestor, known generically as rosuvastatin, is the first statin to hit the US market and has been approved by the FDA for at least six months.
The drug, which is also a statin, has been widely hailed by physicians and patients alike and is often considered a lifesaver for patients with heart disease. In fact, Crestor is estimated to be effective against plaque forming coronary artery disease, a type of heart disease that can cause severe blood pressure drops.

Crestor’s patent on Crestor expired in March 2021 and now stands at over $500 million, although it has yet to be brought to market.
Currently, AstraZeneca is working with a group of pharmaceutical companies that include GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Merck, Novartis, Sanofi, Novo Nordisk, Novo Nordisk U. S. A., and Bristol-Myers Squibb to develop and market new formulations of the drug. In February 2023, the company will be marketing its generic version of Crestor in the US. However, the drug will have to be approved by the FDA to become a statin, and it will need to be sold in the US.
