AstraZeneca has announced the launch of a new version of the cholesterol-lowering drug Crestor (rosuvastatin calcium) in the US market. This new formulation, called CRESTOR, combines the active ingredient rosuvastatin with a lipid-lowering drug. The new Crestor formulation is now available without a prescription, and is available in the US.
The company is also introducing a generic version of CRESTOR that is expected to be sold in the US in the next few weeks. CRESTOR is indicated for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia.
“This new formulation is a new addition to the already-existing statin drugs available in the US market,” said AstraZeneca’s president, Dr. Andrew Wiles. “We look forward to further developing this formulation, and will work closely with our global partner, Pfizer, to develop a safe and effective treatment for patients using this medication.”

The company had hoped that CRESTOR would be an affordable alternative to the statins already prescribed for adults, but has been facing growing competition from generic competitors.
“Given the strong competition from generic manufacturers, AstraZeneca’s development of CRESTOR is progressing well, and will continue to be a significant step forward,” said Wiles. “We look forward to the launch of this innovative formulation in the US market soon.”
The company also announced a new “Priced By” program for AstraZeneca’s product, which will offer eligible patients access to CRESTOR for up to six months, and a “Specialty Plan” which will help reduce the cost of the drug. A special plan will be created for patients who have insurance coverage that is not available in the US.
The company is pleased to announce that the PBM program is now available for patients, who may have insurance coverage that is not covered by their insurance.
